Crazy Cactus Alert

Good day to all of you tropical plant lovers.  If you know a cactus lover, forward this post to them.  I have acquired a very tall columnar cactus. It has been neglected for some time; but I checked it out and it's in good shape.  If you love, and I do mean love, cactus, don't miss this offer. This plant will have taken several years to grow and if I had bought it to resale as new, it would be priced in the hundreds of dollars. Check it out and let me know if you are interested or pop into our shop.

Last Day of COOS Orchid Show - Take It In

Happy Sunday, September 25th to all of you. I told you last week about the 2011 Central Ontario Orchid Society Annual Orchid Show taking place the 24th & 25th of September. (Check back to the last post for location details.)  Linda & I went to the show on Saturday, the 24th, which would have been my mother's birthday. We spent several hours at the show and I suggest that all of you try to take in the last day of the show today, Sunday 25th.

A new feature this year is the hourly raffle draws to win an orchid.  One orchid to be given away on each hour of the show. I'll have to say that I like this feature, particularly since I won one of the draws.  Shown here is the beautiful Cattleya cross orchid that I won.

The show itself was very well represented with several area Orchid Societies displaying beautiful and exotic orchids of varying sizes, varieties, colours and shapes. I took well over 100 pictures and will share many of them on this blog in due time. The displays and individual plants were judged in 18 different categories. This is a great chance to see the best of the best. This picture shows some of the displays in the Show Room.

The room adjoining the main Show Room was filled with orchid vendors and their  orchids, accessories and advice. This is a fabulous place to get your orchids whether you are just starting or a seaoned pro looking to add that one special plant. This picture shows the vendor's area.

Linda and I were very fortunate to have an exclusive seminar session with Jim Kendall of the COOS. Jim spoke of his passion for Phragmipedium orchids from South America.  As well, he was very gracious in answering all of our questions and giving us lots of orchid growing tips.

Well that's it for now. I just wanted to bring you this report while you may still have time to get to the last day of the show.

One last thing - Linda has brought into our shop a new line of floor planters called Harmony. I'll get you lots more information on these new and modern planters; but if you can't wait, give Linda a call at 519-767-2161 or stop by our shop, Plants For All at 66 Dawson Road in Guelph.

Talk to you soon!

Brian to Speak at Guelph Horticultural Society January Meeting

Greetings and a very Happy New Year to you!

With the Christmas holiday time behind us now and the days getting longer, I can't help but feel good that we are on the downhill slide towards Spring.

Coming up, I will be the guest speaker at the January 25th meeting of the Guelph Horticultural Society.  The GHS hold their meetings at the Dublin Street United Church and they start at 7:30 pm.  The topic for the evening will be Cultural Practices for Tending Your Indoor Tropical Plants.

In the past, I has spoken to several different Horticultural Societies; but this will be the first time here in Guelph. It's good to be home.  I have been preparing a new presentation for GHS and am excited to share my practices on tending  indoor tropical plants.  I will discuss what we do in tending the plants in our commercial clients' offices and how you can adapt that to your plant care regimen. We will cover the areas of watering, feeding, fertilizing, temperature, humidity and what to do when these environmental factors change.

For more information about the Guelph Horticultural Society check out their comprehensive web site at www.guelphhort.org

If you have any questions about the topic, contact me at www.plantsforall.goldbook.ca or comment on this blog. I hope that you will be able to join us - Tuesday, January 25th, Dublin Street United Church, Guelph at 7:30 pm.
